STEP 1: Important Factors
The key to learning the handstand push-up is making sure we have the prerequisites to master the movement. Here are the WODprep recommendations that will help you see success faster and safely -
1. Strength
Contrary to popular belief, the handstand push-up is more about raw strength than technique. Making sure you're strong in the overhead press (and even push-ups and close grip bench press) will help you fast track learning the movement.
2. Mobility
While this term is thrown around loosely, with handstand push-ups the ability to get and keep your hands and arms overhead (without your rib cage flaring out) will allow you to work through the entire range of motion and get a handstand push-up much more easily.
3. Stability
If your stabilizer muscles are under developed or not working in unison, lowering yourself to the mat, creating tension and drive needed to get out of the bottom of the handstand push-up or even being comfortable while being upside down will be challenging.
