Lesson 3: The Secret To Kipping "Balance"

One of the big secrets to kipping is staying "balanced" under the bar. If you ever felt like you were swinging without much control, most likely it was because you didn't achieve "balance" and had some sway in your swing.

Here are some drills that can help you develop "balance".

Kip Stops are a great testing drill to start with. Do a small number of kip swings and aim to stop quickly and with control. You can also have a partner help you out by randomly calling out 'stop'. If you're unable to stop "on a dime" and continue to sway on the bar, it means you have a balance issue.

Banded Pull-ups are one of my favourite drills to teach 'balance'. Unlike a traditional banded pull-up, place a thicker resistance band across the rig at sternum level from your hang. Performing kip swings with the band in front of you will prevent you from performing a Tarzan swing and teach the proper engagement needed to stay "balanced".
